Board application for next year:

The application for the ballroom boards of next year is now available. If you have enjoyed being part of ballroom this year, and would like to contribute to making ballroom an amazing experience for others next year- this is your chance! Taking part in running the club is also a great way to develop social and leadership skills.

The ballroom "government" next year will consist of a governing board (4 executive board positions+ 6 coordinator and chair positions) and a BADC competition board (Chair, vice-chair, and 4 coordinator positions). Only Columbia and Barnard undergraduates are eligible to run for the 4 executive board positions, while all club members are eligible to run for the other positions. Only a rising junior who has previously been part of the governing board is eligible to run for president.

I am attaching a word doc file which contains the application, and a description of each of the board positions. I have also included the name and email of the current board member serving each position, so that you can reach out to them if you have any questions. To apply, simply fill out an answer to each of the 6 questions, and email me the file by next Sunday, March 30th.

Feel free to apply for multiple positions, but make sure to rank your choices in order of preference. Good luck!

As every year, we will be paying your fees for MAC comp (January 17-19th) if you are interested in competing. This year, Nicole Barron, volunteer coordinator has contacted us with a message regarding an opportunity to volunteer at the competition (see below). If you are in NYC and free during that weekend, it could be a very fun way to get more involved with ballroom!

    Her message:

"Are you or is your team considering competing at the Manhattan Amateur Classic this January? If you have not heard of the Manhattan Amateur Classic, also known as the MAC, it is one of the largest amateur Ballroom competitions in the country and it takes place in New York City. This year, the competition will take place on January 17, 18, and 19 and it is back at the Manhattan Center at 311 W 34th street. This year I am the Volunteer Coordinator and we need volunteers throughout the competition weekend! EVERYONE can volunteer whether or not you are planning to compete. I am looking for volunteers from set-up on the night of Thursday, January 16, all throughout day and night on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and for break down on Sunday night. It is a huge competition and it could not happen without the help of dedicated volunteers. Volunteer positions include registration, tickets, on deck, judges area, reserved seating management, and much more.

If you are interested in volunteering please email me at mac_volunteer@nyusadance.org or nicolebarron303@gmail.com. Please let me know if you are competing and in what style(s) or what days and times you are available that weekend. The MAC is split into five sessions - Friday day, Friday night, Saturday day, Saturday night, and Sunday. You can tell me which sessions you are available for or what general times you are available. If you are specifically interested in set up on the night of Thursday, January 16 or the break down on the night of Sunday, January 19 please let me know! Also if you can speak any Russian and are available that Sunday please let me know especially!"

This is a slightly modified message. To see the full message, please refer to the weekly email, or email Djordje if you did not get it.

That is all for this week, have a good one!

You can find a picture of the jackets and t-shirts in the e-mail Djordje sent this week. Keep in mind that the mens jackets are slim fit and run really small. Apply to be on BADC Board

As many of you already know, BADC (The Big Apple Dancesport Challenge) is a ballroom competition that our team hosts at Columbia every year. It usually attracts about 800 competitors from across the US, and is one of the biggest collegiate ballroom competitions on the East Coast.

This year, we will hold the competition on March 8-9, and we plan to make it even bigger and better than ever before! In order to do this, we will be forming a special board that will be in charge of organizing the event. The board will consist of the following 6 positions:
    • BADC Captain
    • Competition Coordinator
    • Officials Coordinator
    • Registration Coordinator
    • Fundraising Coordinator
    • Volunteering/Housing Coordinator

The coordinators will report to the BADC Captain, who will be in charge of running the competition, and who will report to the Executive Ballroom Board. If you are a member of our club and would like to take part in organizing this exciting event, you can apply for one of these 6 positions. The application consists of a word document with five questions, and is located in the weekly ballroom e-mail. Please download the word doc, type in your answers to the questions, and email it to Djordje(dv2276@columbia.edu) by Sunday, November 3rd. If you did not get the email this week and wish to apply, please e-mail Djordje asking for the application and he will send it to you.

A description of each position is included in the application. Feel free to apply for multiple positions, but make sure to list them in order of preference.

That is all for this week, and have a good one.

    Mentorship Initiative
Posted on Tue, Jan 31 2012
This semester, we are teaming up with our open-dancer alumni to pilot a new mentorship program! Basically, any dancer bronze level or below who is new to the team this school year and is interested in competing more effectively and progressing more quickly can sign up to be matched with an open dancer, who will serve as his/her mentor. Each mentor will have a small group of mentees (3-5, most likely), and each group will make plans to meet regularly and to practice together. This way, any newcomer/bronze level dancer can get individual attention from a higher level dancer, and can work on much more specific issues and techniques than can be addressed during group classes. If you're interested in such a program, please fill out this form by 2/4/12.

If you have any questions about the Mentorship Initiative, please email our Newcomer Chair, Shivrat (sc3226@columbia.edu).
